The Nightmare before Christmas

In the story, Jack Skellington is the Pumpkin King of Halloweentown, a realm of reality where the inhabitants make it their life's work to scare humans on Halloween. He's good at his work, and is very popular around town, but it all bores him. In a funk one day, he wanders into a wood where every tree is the doorway to realms serving one or another human holiday, and falls through the doorway into Christmas. There, he sees scenes of such glee and good will that he is overwhelmed. He returns to Halloweentown with the inspiration to persuade his fellow citizens to kidnap Santa and do Christmas in their own Halloweentown way -- complete with snakes and shrunken heads. Despite strong arguments against this project by Jack's otherwise loyal girlfriend, Sally,Santa is duly captured, and the townspeople prepare a very special Christmas for everyone. Jack is excited about the new plan, and at first doesn't notice that Sally isn't around much anymore. Meanwhile, Oogie Boogie, a sinister opponent of Jack's, has re-kidnapped Santa and has captured Sally as well. Since Sally is the true love of Jack's life and (he eventually realizes) the only one who can be relied upon to tell him the truth in every circumstance, a confrontation with Oogie Boogie becomes inevitable. In addition to being a monumental work of animation (it took over 120 animators and many more technicians more than two years to film it), this show features ten very appropriate musical numbers by composer Danny Elfman, who also supplies Jack's singing voice. In October 2006, fans of the innovative animated classic got to experience The Nightmare Before Christmas in a whole new dimension when the film was re-released into theaters in Disney Digital 3-D -- a process developed to add remarkable new depth to films that were originally released in standard 2-D.

* Ariën van Weesenbeek (Drums)

Biography

Travelling around the world and meeting other cultures; those are in short the major sources of inspiration for singer, songwriter, composer and guitarist Mark Jansen, both as a person and a musician. The latest proof of his unlimited interest in the world around him is the album The Phantom Agony, the colourful debut album of the recently founded Dutch band Epica. Mark Jansen and his fellow musicians harbour a great interest in other cultures, especially Arab ones. The warmth with which people treat one anotherthere, but also the music from that part of the world. The varied sound of Epica reflects all that. Also influences from other parts of the world, including South-America found their way to the songs that figure on the debut alum. The band also intends to do a lot of touring in order to add as much as possible to the gamut of experiences and impressions.

After a brief and stormy period as one of the creative king pins of the successful Dutch band After Forever, Mark Jansen felt compelled to start all over again recently. He didn’t tarry for a second. On the day it dawned on him he no longer had a future in his old band, the plan matured for new challenge. Contacts were made, auditions were carried out and a name for the band was thought up. Initially Sahara Dust was picked as the name of the band, but in the first weeks of 2003 this name was definitely changed into Epica. In the embryonic stage the band worked with the Norwegian singer Helena Michaelsen of Trail of Tears. However, a definitive choice was made for the young Dutch singing talent Simone Simons. The line-up was further stabilised with Coen Jansen (keyboards), Ad Sluijter (guitar), Jeroen Simons (drums) – both from Cassiopeia, and Yves Huts (bass) from Axamenta.

The debut album was recorded in the Gate Studio in Wolfsburg, Germany; under the expert guidance of the renowned producer and technician Sacha Paeth (a.o. Aina, Rhapsody, Kamelot, Angra). The variation in the material appears from the very first track on the CD. Ádyta’ is a classically tinted intro, sung in Latin. The band works with a classically trained choir, whereas extra colour is added to the music thanks to eight strings: 3 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos and a double bass. The red thread is mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, who with the style of a classically trained opera singer stays on top of the material. Epica is a band that is fond of contrasts. Solid guitars versus flawless choral singing and strings. The sublime singing of Simone Simons versus the excruciating grunts of Mark Jansen. One of the songs in which all these aspects constitute a fascinating unity is ‘Sensorium’. The combination of classic and extreme has seldom sounded so convincingly.

While making The Phantom Agony the band was particularly inspired by scores. It is the ambition of Epica to pack up emotions in lyrics and sounds and subsequently pass this on to the listener. What the band really wants is giving goose flesh to the audience, the more the better. The title track is a piece of work in which the six band members aimed for that effect. It is up to the individual listener to interpret the lyrics in his or her own way. Yet The Phantom Agony makes clear that Epica doesn’t turn a blind eye to everyday reality. ‘’Façade Of Reality’ is about the world before and after the attacks in the United States on 11 September, and all that changed during that period. For that reason it is a song that means a great deal to the band too.

Finally the name of the band. For the band it initially had two special meanings. First of all it is a tribute to the band Kamelot, of which the band members are all great fans. Epica is the title of one of their CDs. In addition to this Epica is a place in the universe where all the answers to vital questions are to be found. A meaning that fits perfectly with the tenor of the lyrics. Recently another meaning was added. Not so long ago Epica was giving a concert in Belgium. Everything went great. At a certain point of time something happened between the stage and the audience. At the end of the concert the audience was chanting the name of the band: ‘E-pi-ca’, ‘E-pi-ca’. It sounded excellently. There and then the band decided that Epica had been the right choice.

Goth vs Emo

What is Gothic?

This is probably the hardest question any goth could try and answer, one may as well ask 'what is society?' as it has so many facets it defies any definitive explanation.

Goth in its simplest form, is a subculture. A group of people who feel comfortable within each others company. There is no specific thing that defines what you need to do or be to fit into the goth scene (except of course the implied black clothing). People in the goth scene all have different musical tastes, follow different religions, have different occupations, hobbies, and fashion sense.

Why do people become goths?

Most goths become goths because they have been spurned by 'normal' society because the way they want to live their lives does not fit in with how most people are told to live theirs. Goths are free thinkers, people who do not accept the moral rules of society because they're told 'This is just how it is' or 'This is what God says!'. Rather goths tend to listen to what you have to say, and make up their own mind. This kind of free thinking and rejection of dogma earns only rejection in todays society.

However because of this rejection from 'normal' society, goths have banded together to associate with other free thinkers. This has a beneficial effect on both the individual and society as a whole. For the individual they have a sense of belonging, and friends they can associate with. For society it removes one more misfit filled with rage from society's streets.

This of course is not the case for all goths. Many goths today are goths for a variety of other reasons. They like the music, or the clubs are better, they have goth friends and joined in with them, or they just like staying up late nights and goths are the only ones awake to talk to.

The gothic stereotype

Many stereotypes of goths exist these days. It seems everyone has their own way to define 'what is goth'. From the stereotypes based on clothing to music right up to the stereotypes of all goths being satanists or part of some kind of cult. Categorically, all of these are false.

The goth scene is just as widely varied as society in general. There are many different professions represented in the scene, from highly skilled professionals like doctors and lawyers, to tradesman, to technically minded people to clerical workers. Many different musical tastes exist (and not all of them goth, there is a HUGE 80's following in the goth scene for some reason). The fashion varies vastly from goth to goth from the traditional flowing victorian style garments to the buckled and studded style regalia (also called industrial style, which is often closely related with goths, and have come to an understanding of co-existance, if uneasily at times).

How do I get into goth?

This is the simplest part of the page. Go check out our Community section over on the left, and use it to find out whats going on in your local area. Goths tend to be accepting and open minded. Just turn up to a club or event wearing all black and your already in the goth scene. You'll pick it up as you go along (just a hint though, lay off the vampire comments!).

The gothic sense of humour is highly developed, and often leans toward the satirical. Quietly laughing at the more idiotic and less tolerant factions of society that seem to think yelling out of cars at us makes them cooler. Goths have learned to laugh at themselves and see society in a much different light. They have had to, and it is a trait most would not give up.

Goths have for the most part (not unanimously of course, but mostly) dropped all forms of prejudice. Noone is afraid within the goth scene to come out as being gay, and noone has to hide their religion for fear of scorn from their peers or zealots wanting to convert them from the arms of Satan. In fact because of these facts (and the general lack of prejudice) the goth scene has a large proportion of gays/bisexuals, and followers of non-mainstream religions and views. This of course is the most important aspect of gothdom, and why most goths became goths in the first place, tolerance.

But they think weird!

Ah, but this is the beauty of goths. Most subjects that are taboo in 'normal' society are freely discussed and debated about. Death, religion, magick, mysticism, and many other topics that are only roached carefully outside of the gothic community. Most goths have realised that fear is only a reaction instilled in us by dogmatic propaganda, and once you realise there is nothing to fear from the topic, whats to stop you discussing it?

Goths often revel in the fear given to them by society as a whole. Often the behavior exhibited by society to them based on society's perception of them from stereotypes, rumour, etc are a constant source of entertainment. Of course, most of the rumours are totally unfounded, goths are people like everyone else, however when you already have a reputation, going for the shock factor is often far too tempting to see how much society at large is willing to believe (or deduce) with only a little encouragement.

This does not totally fall away once you get inside the scene unfortunately, and goths are all too often tempted to try for the shock factor within the scene (which turns out more tacky than shocking). Goths when you get down to it can be a rather pretentious bunch, trying for those extra 'goth points' on the gothier than thou scale, but it adds to the enjoyment.

History of Goth

Modern goth (ignoring where the name itself originally comes from) started in the early 80's as part of the punk subculture (which is itself was a rejection of most societal values, and anything considered part of the 'norm'). The phrase was coined by the band manager of Joy Division, Anthony H. Wilson, who described the band as 'Gothic compared with the pop mainstream'. The term stuck, and as punk eventually died, Goth survived and became its own subculture. The punk clothing and hairstyles mellowed, and the core 'rejection of society' attitude alone lived on in the gothic subculture. Over time this itself has been modified to be more of a 'no more blind acceptance of society's values' as opposed to rejection because it was there to be rejected (and because you could get away with it!).

Movies such as The Crow, and bands such as the Bauhaus helped establish the gothic image as dark, depressing, and even evil. As more and more 'dark' movies came out, numbers in the gothic subculture expanded, and there is now a gothic community in almost every major city around the world, and quite a number of towns have their own representative contingent. Nowdays there are more goth bands around than ever, and it has turned from an 80's phenomenon into a 90's way of life for many people. Unlike the punk subculture that it spawned from, there even exists a class of mature goths, still following the scene around even past their 20's and into their 30's and beyond.

But the conclusion is Goths is the person who's:
  • wear black

  • wear black nail-polish (for boys and girls)

  • are pale (and may wear makeup to make themselves more pale)

  • dye their hair black or some other conveniently dark color

  • worship Tim Burton (NBC, Emily the Strange)

  • worship candles and sometimes fairies as long as they are fairies that wear black from Hot Topic

  • smoke cloves until their parents find out

  • get piercings a lots.

  • get celtic tattoos if their parents let them

  • whine about their cruel, awful parents who won't let them get tongue/eyebrow piercings or celtic tattoos and then make plans to get the piercings and celtic tattoos anyway and brag to all their friends about how they're going to do it and then hope that all their friends will forget about it because they don't really want to piss of their dad THAT much even though a black celtic arm-band or some kind of cross thing would look FRICKIN' AWESOME

What is Emo

Emo means emotional which comes from "emotional hardcore" music.Emo also described a nerd clothing style but starting to changed more into black, black and more black. They dyed their hair black and wearing a black eyeliner. And now you might be confused between goth and emo.By almost all current definitions, emo clothing is characterized by tight jeans on males and females alike, long fringe (bangs) often brushed to one side of the face, dyed black, straightened hair, tight t-shirts which often bear the names of rock bands, studded belts, belt buckles, Chuck Taylor All-Stars, skate shoes, or other black shoes (often old and beaten up) and thick, black horn-rimmed glasses.

Both Goth and Emo think about darkness and death and loud music and stuff, right? So, what is the key difference between modern Emo and Goth philosophies?

Music that has a voice and a face for the many raging emotions that accompanies being alive; that is the basic of Emo. I am not saying that these bands purposely dwell on severly depressing issues; in fact, it can often be quite the opposite. There have been many love ballads, right along with screaming, bloodletting, heartache. The difference between Emo and the other genres of music is that Emo does not try to puzzle you with mind games: they wear their hearts on their sleeves. In addition to that, they have a unique sound, not quite rock, not quite metal, but almost somewhere in-between.

However, for me, emo is kind of an insult but Goth is not. Emo teens are seen as taking life too seriously and invoking drama in life where it doesn't exist. Because other teenagers NEVER do that. Other teenagers are paragons of emotional stability! It just an emo who just want to attracting people to focus into themselves.

Everyday is Halloween

"Everyday is Halloween": this phrase comes from the song "(Everyday Is) Halloween" by the band Ministry.
The unofficial lyrics are:

Well I live with snakes and lizards and other things that go bump in the night, but to me everyday is Halloween,
I've given up hiding and started to fight, and I started to fight.

Well, anytime, anyplace, anywhere that I go all the people seem to stop and stare.
They say, "Why are you dressed like it's Halloween? You look so absurd. You look so obscene."

Chorus
Oh, why can't I live a life for me?
Why should I take the abuse that's served?
Why can't they see they're just like me? I
t's the same, it's the same in the whole wide world.

Well I let their teeny minds think that they're dealing with someone who is over the brink, and I dress this way just to keep them at bay because
Halloween is everyday, hey is everyday hey.

Repeat Chorus

Oh, why can't I live a life for me?
Why should I take the abuse that's served?
Why can't they see they're just like me?
I'm not the one that's so absurd.

Why hide it? Why fight it?
Hurt feelings, best to stop feeling hurt from denials, reprisals. It's the same, it's the same in the whole wide world.

The Story Behind My Name

Symbolic meaning of Halos

A halo generally symbolizes the following things.
  • The divine
  • Majestic Grandeur
  • The inspiration that comes from within.

Halos in Egyptian art- The evolution of the concept of Halo is closely linked with Egyptian tradition of sun and animal worship. Thus though halo is traditionally linked to Christianity it was in existence long before Christ was born. Egyptians Halos are distinctly different from the modern day notion of the Halo. According to Frederick Goodman "The 'halo', which is ultimately derived from the magical symbolism of the Egyptians ... is almost like a sun, and, symbolically speaking, may be considered to be the equivalent of a small and radiant sun, streaming forth spiritual light”

Halos in Greek and Roman art- Greek culture is replete with examples of halos .the Romans also embraced willingly the symbol of halo like the Greeks. Many Roman and Greek gods were depicted with halos in their paintings. More interestingly, a time came when Roman emperors began to portray halos in imperial coins.

Halos in Early Christianity- In Christian tradition Jesus Christ was always portrayed with a halo. However use of this symbol became generalized and soon martyrs or persons with royal bearing were portrayed with halos.

Halos in later Christianity- During the Renaissance period the halos went out of fashion as the new emphasis was on perspective. Many art critics hold Italian painter Giotto responsible for this change. However some people in the world of art claim that halos did not disappear totally as they began to be in vogue as hats or arches. Use of Halo in mainstream western art however made a comeback in the highly symbolic art of William Blake. Art underwent radical changes in the 20th century and consequently many schools of painting came up who used this symbol of halo in their paintings.

Cradle of Filth -Artist of the Month (OCTOBER)

The cradle is rocking, the dead are rising, the seas will boil and the skies will fall. As the world stands poised on the edge of mass destruction, the freaks, fools and monsters who rule us are about to be taught a real lesson in the use of power, for Cradle of Filth have created the greatest album of their career to date. 'Damnation and a Day', has been carved out of the darkness that is about to engulf what we know as civilisation.

The recordings, spawned from the loins of five of the most controversial Lords of darkness ever to walk the earth grew to their full strength at Parkgate, a studio set in the blood-soaked town of Battle, set in darkest Hastings. Inspired by their surroundings, the five Horsemen of the Apocalypse fed on the blood of Doug Cook who was unwittingly drafted in to co-produce and engineer the album. Little did he know that he was merely a victim.

Cradle sucked the knowledge out of their hapless victim and used his withered shell of a body to help direct them in their quest to create the darkest album they could possibly imagine, before disposing of his corpse in a ritualistic shooting. The bullet still lays lodged in his face. The corpse of course has never been found.

But the blood letting did not stop there. Daniel Presley, was hung, drawn and quavered after scoring the final pages of music for the live orchestra.

The death toll now standing at 10 (that's including the rest of the staff at Parkgate, who died slowly over the five months of recording), Cradle still weren't satiated, so a week spent in Budapest saw the death toll rise to 82 as they massacred the 40 piece orchestra and the 32 piece choir.

Hungary has once again fallen under the shadow of evil. Elzabeth Bathory will pale into comparison when this news gets out.

'Damnation and a Day' was scripted by the prince of darkness Dani Filth, whose quest to decipher the truth behind the Bible, brought him to summon forth Lucifer during a ritualistic killing. The once expelled angel willingly gave his side of the story from beginning to what will be the inevitable end for us. You will bear witness to his tale, during the 17 tracks of the concept album 'Damnation and a Day' which lies before you. Your death is nigh, so listen carefully and then offer your soul to the Filth and you might be saved, deny them and your destruction will come in many forms.

They will choose it, they will watch it and they will undoubtedly laugh in your tortured face.

The sonic soundscape that encapsulates the satanic readings were finely crafted from the cries that resonate from the depths of Hades by lords Dani, Paul, Martin, Adrian and Dave. The final stage was the mix. The two disciples known as Rob Caggiano and Steve Regina were called upon to aid the dark lords in their quest, along with the reanimated tortured soul of Doug Cook.

Once you have listened to what is to come, you will bow your heads to one of the finest albums to rise from the cradle.

Sony have now embraced the darkness and under the influence of evil have become slaves to the dark powers that have been engulfing them for over a year, all have committed their souls to spreading the message and will by the March 10th 2003 release unto us the future.

So go forth and cut out the tongues of the unbelievers, lay waste to the trash that assaults our ears every day, for that is merely a smoke screen to numb your minds from the truth, and beg forgiveness for your past sins. For if you don't, you're fucked.

World domination takes apart society as we know it in mid March when the Cradle swings into action and takes to the road to hell, first into Europe and then back to the US to follow up last year's sell out tour. So all the petty little people out there with their bombs and their guns better run away now, because it's show time and they haven't got a hope in hell, even if they do have an access all areas pass.

Cradle of filth have finally arrived at the palace of righteousness, ready to drain the blood from your face and whatever is left of your miserable pathetic carcass.

How to Make a Room Gothic

Gothic rooms can be dark, beautiful, and enchanting. Dark colours, black, red and silver candles, soft music ....or maybe band posters, mysterious works of art, and strange but appealing ornaments. Whatever the style, whatever the purpose, one of the best ways to beautify a room is to make it Gothic. However, one must pick up some basic skills and their own unique taste, as well as some rules and tips, to create the perfect Gothic room. Painting the walls black and claiming to be deeply "Gothic" will not pull off the effect. If you want to make your room Gothic, but need some guidance, then this article is for you.

STEPS

1. Clean your room. Gothic and messy do not mix. It is absolutely essential that you remove all clutter, unnecessary objects and completely clean up the room. A good way to start is to create some piles: a "keep" pile, "throw away" pile and a "maybe" pile. Arrange everything into those three piles and go from there. Remember to clean the room very thoroughly- dusting, washing, vacuuming, polishing...whatever needs to be done.

2.Decide on your style. There is no one style for a Gothic room, which gives you a little diversity and freedom of choice while decorating. Before you jump into things, have a good think about what style, effect and message you're going for. Remember that the room still needs to be comfortable and you need to create an environment that you feel happy and safe in, while also being appealing and attractive to others. You may want to create a fantasy room, complete with silver walls and stars, or a darker room, with black walls and haunted pictures. There are many other styles you can go for, but feel free to create your own.

3.Paint the walls. One of the easiest ways to pull off one of the biggest effects is to paint the walls. Don't fall into the stereotyped trap and immediately buy fifty cans of black paint. Take some time to decide what kind of color you would like. You could also create mural, and make a feature wall. Some suggestions for colors would be silver, deep purple, black, or maybe even a royal red or blue.

4.Get some ornaments. Ornaments are essential for a Gothic room, as they beautify it and add whatever the desired effect. Some ornaments are designed to suit the Gothic style, while others simply slide in accidentally. Browse the shops and online for things that catch you eye. Some suggestions would be:
#Candles. Candles will always give you a great effect, because they come in so many different styles. Silver, black or red candles are all good. Cream colored or yellow/gold candles can also set off a very romantic look. Scented candles are also extremely effective.
#Candle holders. Majestic, silver candle holders will add a great decoration to any style of gothic room, with or without candles.
#Cushions. Black silk, silver embroidery, crystal white... cushions create a relaxed, comfy and beautiful environment. Gothic cushions are not difficult to find, either.
#Plants. Don't think of the immediate plant: green and leafy, filling the pot. Try other plants, or even fake ones, in pretty silver, white, or dark pots. Plants with white or red flowers are good for a romantic goth look. You can also try the fake plants, which are much easier to look after, and are designed in a variety of styles. You could also cut off rose petals on a rose.

5.Add some artwork. Beautiful paintings or other mysterious works of will always have a big impact on a room. If you're an artist, get creative and make your own things. If not, shop around and see what you can find.Masks, mosaics and paintings are all very good.

6.Get some bedsheets. Ditch the plain bedsheets for something more dark or romantic. Black silk is perfect, as is velvet, plain white, silver, and if you're looking for more color, purples, reds and blues. Have a good browse and find something that works for you. Remember to get something comfortable and easy to look after, and try to match it with the colour theme. You can also get some bed hangings- white lace is perfect.

7.Buy a rug. Look around for colours that suit your room. Try getting something unique and interesting, something that will catch people's eye. Remember to make sure you buy one that isn't high maintenance and won't wear out over the years.

8.Get some new furniture. If you want, you can simply paint your old furniture, or even leave it as it is. But if you can afford to, why not get some new things? Dark marble and other stones, as well as wood, are good materials for Gothic furniture. White, black, silver, or dark, deep woody browns are good colors.

9.Play a little music. Set up a CD player or stereo and mystify or rock people's minds with your choice of music. Keep your CDs on display so people can see what kind of stuff you like.

Night of Silent Contemplation

The pills and razor blade rest at my side

This is not the end but the beginning

I have had my low points

I have taken a few pills in the past

Only to obliterate the world from my mind

A few moments of peace

Before everything comes crashing down

Disjointed memories of an ambulance and a hospital

Drifting in and out of consciousness

How in God’s name has it come to this?

I reached out to so many souls

But they were too busy living their own lives

Moments of enlightenment followed by days of depression

But that was the past

Today is the dawning of a new reality

I have taken all that this world can throw at me

The pills and razor blade still rest at my side

But they are not going to see any action tonight

It is a night of silent contemplation

I put everything back in their proper place

This world can be a better place

I will fight on a little longer

The pills and razor blade will always be there

My silent friends who lead me into darkness

I am ready to stare into the light

At least for one more day

My Birthday

Happy Birthday Glitter

Lacuna Coil - Artist of the Month(SEPTEMBER)

The genesis of Lacuna Coil can be traced back to Milan, 1994 when guitarist and songwriter Marco Coti-Zelati and his friend, Andrea Ferro, form the band Sleep of Right. Marco plays guitar, Andrea plays bass, and Raffaele Zagaria joins them on guitar and Michelangelo on the drums. The band plays their first live gig in Bologna, Italy in 1994. They record Bleeding Souls which sees release in 1995 on the Noise of Bolgia compilation CD.
Marco soon moves to playing bass so that Andrea can concentrate on vocals and they are joined by Claudio Leo, as second guitarist, and Leonardo Forti on drums; following the departure of Michelangelo. Their next decision no doubt changes the direction their future music would take forever; they ask a female friend, Cristina Scabbia, to sing some backing tracks for them.
It is clear that Cristina’s soaring, natural vocals, perfectly compliment the deep growling of Andrea Ferro and they ask her to join the band permanently.

The band's 2006 release, Karmacode peaked at number 28 on the Billboard 200. Their latest release, Shallow Life, debuted at number 16 on the Billboard charts. The album marks the band diverging their sound from gothic metal to straight-forward alternative hard rock.

Gothic Terms and Phrases

alternateen: This term is meant to designate those teenybopper kids who listen to alternative music and try to be different by looking identical to other trend-following teenagers who are trying to be different. Usually used in reference to the kids who listen to Pearl Jam or U2, for example, and other such Top 40 bands that are classified as alternative for some reason. (The gothic version of these types are called baby bats.)

angst: The existential suffering and depression one feels when one can see the world in all its tragedy. See "oh the angst of it all."

baby bat: A derogatory term for those wannabe Goths who are only familiar with the superficial aspects of the culture. They may do their makeup horribly and only listen to the most popular of the goth bands. They are mostly the younger kids going through a phase and trying to look cool. However people tend to fling this label at anyone they don't like. A lot of people prefer not to use the label because it implies a "more gothic than thou" attitude.

Batcave: A club in Soho (London) that began in the early eighties and nurtured the first generation of gothics from their punk heritage. Bands like Alien Sex Fiend played there live. It was closed down years later with the apparent death of the Gothic movement in the UK. The term Batcave also refers to the more punk oriented Gothic.

bondage babe: Girls decked out in fetish clothing at clubs, including bondage collar, bondage bracelets, bondage belt and some sort of latex, vinyl, or rubber outfit. Usually intended to mean the people who are following the fetish fashion trend rather than those who know much about fetish and BDSM culture. Also bondage boy.

Bondage gear: For example, bracelets, belts, collars, etc. that will have a metal O ring or D ring attached. See Mary's picture for a look at a bondage belt. See Amy's picture for a look at a bondage collar. The purpose is to attach something like rope, for example, to the metal ring in some sort of way to restrict a person's movement, thus the idea "bondage". It is a popular trend among Goths to wear these, even if they don't use them for bondage. See BDSM.

BDSM: Represents Bondage, Discipline, and Sado-Masochism (also related, Dominance & Submission = DS). It is a form of sexual fantasy play between consenting adults often involving fetishes, focusing on mental, sensual and erotic experience over the standard sexual intercourse, and requiring a great level emotional trust and communication between partners. BDSM does not have anything to do with using pain or force on someone who is an unwilling victim. Although Goths tend to appear to be familiar with the practices of bondage by their apparel, most of those people wearing vinyl pants and bondage bracelets don't know the first thing about BDSM and are following a fashion trend. The majority of BDSM practitioners have nothing to do with gothic, and they view bondage gear as a tool, not an accessory.

*devil bunny: The term comes from a song by My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult. It is used to designate the people who think "Satan is cool," but are not exactly worshippers of Satan.

Doom & Gloom: The type of Goth focused on morbid, tragic, depressing or apocalyptic themes. See mopey goths.

fetish: The dictionary's definition of fetish is excessive sexual focus on an object of fixation. Fetish fashion covers a wide range of fabrics such as leather, PVC, vinyl, rubber, and latex. It also includes items such as stiletto heels, thigh high boots, corsets and bondage gear or other items of clothing that one might become fixated on. See BDSM.

first generation/second generation: First generation emerged mostly in the UK in the late seventies and early eighties as a splinter from the punk movement characterized by bands like The Damned, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Joy Division. They were called Gothic later on, but most didn't consider themselves Gothic. By the mid to late eighties, the Gothic movement was waning. In the late eighties/early nineties, a new generation of Goth bands emerged, for example The Shroud, Rosetta Stone, Nosferatu and London After Midnight, who were the first to characteristically call themselves Gothic. This is when the U.S. Gothic movement grew significantly, and Goth became recognized as a distinct subculture. Whether or not second generation is authentically gothic depends on whom you ask. Many of those first generation adherents will say it is not, and many others will say that second generation is a bad imitation of first generation.

*glamgoth: A sarcastic term used for bands, (and their fans) who are excessively concerned with fitting the stereotypical Goth image. These bands might spend longer putting on their makeup for a concert than the actual concert lasts. Frequently during the set they might take a clove break or stop because their makeup is smearing. Their stage names will be something like Vlad or Lestat. You might find them singing about angst and tragedy, vampires, or doing excessively cheesy things.

gothic slide: A characteristically gothic dance move in which your boots do not leave the dance floor as you glide across it by moving your feet. Somewhat like the footwork in the movie Footloose, but much more chaotic.

integrity: A band with integrity will not compromise the artistic expression in their music in order to sell more records. Usually integrity means that a band is creating adventurous, meaningful or original music. See selling out.

"in the scene": 1) Being involved in the social scene, especially frequenting clubs. 2) Also refers to people who go to all the "happening" parties every night. Someone deeply involved in the scene wants you to think they know everyone at a club by giving anyone that is even a brief acquaintance a hug as if they were great friends. They might say, "You know, it's sad when I look around and realize I know everyone." They are also big name droppers. You might hear them say something like, "Yeah, William Faith (of Faith and the Muse) invited me to come on tour with them, but I told him that I just didn't have the time."

kindergoth: Also, kindergothen. It can be derogatory, meaning a poser much like baby bat, or it can also be neutral, meaning a very young Goth, usually 16 or younger.

Mansonite: Much akin to the ninny, the Mansonite worships the band, and the lead singer who goes by the same name, Marilyn Manson. This term is usually used for those fans who like to dress up like him, do their makeup like him and wear Marilyn Manson t-shirts. Many goths will use this term in a derogatory way towards the teenagers they think are foolish for liking Marilyn Manson.

melodrama: Also, psychodrama. In the dictionary, melodrama means a work characterized by extravagant drama and theatricality, appealing to the emotions. Melodrama is used to describe the way a social scene often seems like a soap opera.

mod/waver: A term for fans of Modern/New Wave music. Mods usually love eighties music and British pop such as Depeche Mode, The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths, etc.

mopey Goths: Goths who have an overdeveloped sense of angst. These Goths are the ones you may find brooding in dark corners, pondering the pain of existence, wondering why their girlfriend/boyfriend has torn their heart out (again). In general, they tend to take life very seriously.

"more gothic than thou": A sarcastic phrase used to designate a snobbish attitude, or describe people who take themselves too seriously. A play on "'holier than thou." Someone with a "more gothic than thou" attitude will likely tell you about the gothic bands they are into by saying, "You probably haven't heard of them."

net.goth: A term for those Goths who frequently post to the alt.gothic newsgroup and have a fairly well known presence among the internet Goth community.

ninny: A derogatory term for enthusiastic fans of the band Nine Inch Nails . The Nine Inch Nails symbol is . The term ninny is used to express the idea that people who worship Trent Reznor (who essentially is Nine Inch Nails) are foolish.

"oh so gothic": 1) A sarcastic phrase to express one's opinion of something as Goth-worthy i.e. "I see you have all of the Bauhaus albums on vinyl. That's oh so gothic of you," or "Those skull shaped candle holders are oh so gothic." 2) A sarcastic phrase for those who take fitting the image of being gothic too seriously. Say it with a really cheesy English upper-class accent to add emphasis.

"Oh the angst of it all": A sarcastic phrase used to mimic Goths who take themselves too seriously and are constantly brooding. To add emphasis when saying it, put the back of your hand to your forehead and look like the weight of the world is on your shoulders.

perky Goth: Some may say this is an oxymoron, but perky Goths are people who like the gothic style and music, but don't like the doom and gloom attitude some Goths have. Perky Goths try not to take themselves too seriously and don't brood. They like to have fun. You'll often find them wearing, for example, body glitter, a mixture of black and non-black clothing, and telling the mopey Goths to lighten up. The mopey Goths say that they are missing the point of Gothic entirely.

raver: Can either refer to a fan of techno music, or techno music itself. Techno music is characterized by an electronic, digital, fast beat created by drum machines. There is also a large subculture surrounding it. Large, secret, underground gatherings of techno music and drug use are called raves.

rivethead: A fairly recent term used to describe fans of industrial music. The term Industrial was coined in 1976 (another child of the punk movement) several years before Gothic emerged. However, it remained only a music form for much longer before a culture developed around it. Gothic as a subculture is older than industrial subculture. See Industrial in the Music Related Definitions.

selling out: A term used to describe bands who were once underground and then became popular, Top 40 music. Usually the term selling out refers to the band or artist compromising their musical quality or artistic expression in order to sell more music. They are essentially selling themselves. It often is used by the underground elitists to justify not liking a band based only on who else listens to them. Music that has sold out has somehow become diluted, common, and generic when it once may have had specialness, power and force. Whether the artist did the diluting or the constant repetition of a song on the radio, MTV etc. dilutes it, the effect is the same. See integrity.

spooky kid: This is a very recent term which doesn't have much widespread usage quite yet. The spooky kids are followers of Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails and are mostly under 18 years old. (Originally the name of the band was Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids.) People confuse spooky kids for Goths, which is frustrating to Goths because Goth culture gets blamed for the stupid things spooky kids do. Spooky kids and Goths don't associate with each other very much, and they tend to not like each other. Goths resent them for being poseurs and giving Goth a bad name, and they resent Goths for being snobs and elitists. Spooky kid is usually used as a derogatory term similar to baby bat, but it specifically refers to the younger and ardent Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails fans. I'm not sure if spooky kids call themselves spooky kids, I think most of them call themselves Goth.

ultragoth: 1)In the pie chart, Ultra Goth is described as those for whom gothic is who they are, not what they dress up as. 2) Also, the Goths who have a more extreme appearance and/or have been in the scene for a long time. They are usually over 20 years old. 3) Often used to designate the gothic snobs, ones who have a "more gothic than thou" attitude.

underground: Something that is not widely known about among the general population. It is secret, obscure, hidden, rare, only for a selected few who are knowledgeable enough to pursue it. There are two tendencies that often occur in those who adamantly participate in an underground culture. The first is elitism. In general the elitists view themselves as having suffered (persecution, harassment) to become a part of something rare and unusual. They dislike those who have not suffered to join the culture, those who are following a trend. The trend-followers defile what was sacred and make common what was once rare. The elitists view that culture as something they had to search for, discover, and suffer ridicule for; and they despise those who had it handed to them. The second tendency of those in an underground culture is a wide familiarity (often acceptance and friendliness depending on the person) with other people in the social scene or those who appear to be a part of the same culture.

*weekender/weekend Goth: 1) In the pie chart, weekender is defined as the kids going through a phase. See also baby bat. 2) Also, weekend Goths are the people who dress normally when around normal people and dress gothic when they go to gothic clubs. Basically, they are the ones who conform to whatever environment they are in. It has nothing to do with their knowledge of the culture, it has to do with their appearance in different contexts. Some weekend Goths have to dress somewhat normally because of a professional career but are Goth at heart. Some don't dare to suffer the ostracism they would receive by looking different among normal people and are only closet Goths Depending on which type of person the term is applied to, it can have either neutral or negative connotations.

* These are the terms I'm not quite sure if only I use. Other people may use different terms.

Note: These definitions are only my view of how these terms are used and some could vary by region. Since you won't find many of these terms in the dictionary, someone else might offer a slightly different definition. However, they are helpful terms to understand.

Death Gothic Poem: The Necromancer

'tis said a man dies not, for those who loved
Preserve his life in treasured memory.
No tender thought of thee 'gainst death can win,
For too soon, thou hast perished, thou art free.
No sweet remembered touch, nor fond visage
Comes to light my own obscurity.

The silent sands alone haunt thought and dream,
A barren calm, the failure of all strife,
Exhausted pyre where brightness found an end.
The necromancer's rite brings naught to life:
Recall, remember! Fool, who seeks to bind,
Wild evocation spent in hopeless quest--
No voice responds; bleak vision fills the mind:
The blackened ground where love was laid to rest.

No need in me remains for sight or sense,
To wander where we dreamed, and loved, and wept,
Nor dwell in graveyards of experience:
Though faith is broken, bitter vow is kept.
He cannot live through me; this shattered frame
Holds no bright ghost; the vision, growing dim,
Transmutes to ashes ravaged by the flame.
It falls to me, therefore, to follow him.
The promise sworn that death should never part,
Borne out, the vow much stronger than the heart

The Symbolic Meaning of the Pentagram

Types Of Pentagram

The Pentagram is a symbol of a star encased in a circle. Always with 5 points (one pointing upward), each has its own meaning. The upward point of the star is representative of the spirit. The other four points all represent an element; earth, air, fire, and water. All these things contibutite to life and are a part of each of us. The 5 pointed star represent human body and the number 5 is symbolic to human being. Human have five fingers/toes on each limb extremity. Human commonly note five senses - sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste. Human perceive five stages or initiations in our lives - eg. birth, adolescence, coitus, parenthood and death. The number 5 is associated with Mars. It signifies severity, conflict and harmony through conflict. In Christianity, five were the wounds of Christ on the cross. There are five pillars of the Muslim faith and five daily times of prayer.

The number 5 is prime. The simplest star - the pentagram - requires five lines to draw and it is unicursal; it is a continuous loop

Protection against evil

The pentagram has long been believed to be a potent protection against evil, a symbol of conflict that shields the wearer and the home. The pentagram has five spiked wards and a womb shaped defensive, protective pentagon at the centre.

Five Elements

The five elements contains four of matter (earth, air, fire and water) and the quintessential - spirit. These may be arrayed around the pentagrams points. The word quintessential derives from this fifth element - the spirit. Tracing a path around the pentagram, the elements are placed in order of density - spirit (or aether). fire, air, water, earth. Earth and fire are basal, fixed; air and water are free, flowing.

The single point upwards signifies the spirit ruling matter (mind ruling limbs); is a symbol of rightness. With two points up and one (spirit) downwards, subservient, the emphasis is on the carnal nature of Man.

The pentagram as a Christian symbol

At the medieval times, the five points of the pentagram represented the five wounds of Christ on the Cross. It was a symbol of Christ the Saviour. This is in stark contrast to today where the pentagram is criticized by modern Fundamentalist Christians, as being a symbol of evil. The church eventually chose the cross as a more significant symbol for Christianity, and the use of the pentagram as a Christian symbol gradually ceased.

Inverted Pentagram

The pentagram may be inverted with one point down. The implication is of spirit subservient to matter, of man subservient to his carnal desires. The inverted pentagram has come to be seen by many pagans as representing the dark side and it is abhorred as an evil symbol. Fundamental christians, indeed, see any form of pentagram as such. However, these are recent developments and the inverted pentagram is the symbol of Gardnerian second degree initiation, representing the need of the witch to learn to face the darkness within so that it may not later rise up to take control. The center of a pentagram implies a sixth formative element - love/will which controls from within, ruling matter and spirit by Will and the controlled magical direction of sexual energies. This is another lesson of initiation.

When was the pentagram used as a satanic symbol?

However, in simpler terms, the truth is that the Church chose to demonize the pentagram (and the pentacle) because it was used in rituals and in the worship of the Old Gods. To the Church, anything that threatened their power and control over the masses was Satanic. It's similar, in fact, to the way that one of the principal Old Gods, Cernunos, became associated with the biblical Satan, although there's no scriptural basis for the comparison.

Satan is a pretty much purely Christian concept (Judaism has the Opposer, but the relationship between the two is tenuous at best). The Pentagram is far more ancient than Christianity. Sumerians and Babylonians, Indo-Europeans used the symbol for a long time without it relating in any way to the Christian "anti-God." In point of fact, it's only after the church demonizes the symbol that those who are opposed to the church (and are thus, according to the church, Satanists) begin using the symbol.Satanism is a construct of Christianity. The pentacle predates both, and has nothing, really, to do with either.

Baphomet
Unique to Satanism. A demonic deity and symbolic of Satan. Can be seen as jewelryIt is also now being used by the masons. It can be seen on their buildings and the emblems the put on their vehicles to identify each other.

Why people think gothic is feak?

When I wear my gothic outfit, this what i have to face with..

people staring and laughing

people will hates you

and if i get lucky i will heard they said

look at that gothic freak over there, she's look stupid;or

wow, she's so cool. She's can wear whatever she wants.

But is it true? Does gothic is freak? If they do,why there always have gothic community and this fashion never dies. As you already know, gothic is not a new subculture but its already existed since the Victorian era. Why those people brave enough to wear this kind of clothes even though they has know the consequences.I don't get it why do people have a problem or hate it when someone looks gothic.
When people see a girl wearing tons of black all the sudden every gothic stereotype is pined on them.

With the Goth look, people will assumed you are wearing it to be rebellious, a satanist or devil worshiper. Some who wear the goth look are doing just that, rebelling. Some have pretty bad attitudes. But there are some who just like the look and look great wearing it.
Generally gothic is a people who like the darker side of their life. Outcasts by choice, they listen to underground music because they dislike the mainstream and being a sheep to society. In most cases goths are very smart and artistic and have a sense of humor that can take a while to get used to (unless your a goth). Their humor is about just about everything from themselves to others, and it is intelligent humor. Goths aren't like the average and that's why their goths and contrary to popular belief, they are not all suicidal. In fact few are suicidal, just dark. Goths may come across as scary but are quite nice people. Becoming goth can be provoked by certain things in life that turn people into introverts, but they are still nice people.

Lisa from Seattle said that:
I am a goth. I am proud to be one. I don't think it matters if I dress in all black, because I'm nicer to ANYBODY than any chav could ever be? Why? Simple. Golden Rule. Too bad ignorant chavs and self centered preps have failed to realize that. And no, listening to Marilyn Manson will not make you 'goth'. Nor will he 'un-goth' you. Same with any band. I myself listen to bands like Crossfade and Disturbed, but then I also listen to heavier things like Metallica and Dragonforce. But it's not just music. It's how you are. And who you are. So before you pathetic chav's go to pick on that 'freak' think about this. Who's more pathetic? The kid in black or you, going to pick on him because your self esteem is too low and your ego too big. Not to mention your pants don't stay up.

MadameAmethystKnight said:
I have recently had many people saying that I am a little freaky with my ideas and looks, and because I am a gothic model I will never be cast for anything real or anything comercial based......Thing is I am not a comerical based model, and I am proud to not be the usual type of model you will see around.

But, I don't think gothic such a freak just because we wear black cloths and do listen to dark music. And if we do look different, its doesn't mean that we can be called weirdo. We are a normal person, just LIKE YOU.

Vampire: The Mysterious Creature

____ Vampire, this creature is refer to the blood-sucking undead of Eastern European legends, but it has been often extended to qualify similar legendary creatures in other traditions and cultures. Some define vampire as a blood-sucking ghost; a soul of a dead person superstitiously believed to come from the grave and wander about by night sucking the blood of persons asleep, thus causing their death. This superstition is now prevalent in parts of Eastern Europe, and was especially current in Hungary about the year 1730.Vampires are created through a process called the Embrace. The Embrace is similar to normal vampiric feeding - the vampire drains her chosen prey of blood. However, upon complete exsanguination, the vampire returns a bit of her own immortal blood to the drained mortal. Only a tiny bit - a drop or two - is necessary to turn the mortal into an undead. This process can even be performed on a dead human, provided the body is still warm.
____Once the blood is returned, the mortal "awakens" and begins drinking of his own accord. But, though animate, the mortal is still dead; his heart does not beat, nor does he breathe. Over the next week or two, the mortal's body undergoes a series of subtle transformations; he learns to use the Blood in his body, and he is taught the special powers of his clan. He is now a vampire.
____Some vampire clans Embrace more casually than others, but the Embrace is almost never given lightly. After all, any new vampire is a potential competitor for food and power. A potential childe is often stalked for weeks or even years by a watchful sire, who greedily evaluates whether the mortal would indeed make a good addition to the clan and the line.
____The vampire myth appears to have originated in Transylvania, according to the Stoker novel. Dracula is known to be the first vampire to be called. He is a placid man that appears harmless. His been treated as the curse of the surrounding towns, and the descendants of a strange disease.
____Today there are actually some cults of “vampires” that exist. These are the people who drink small amounts of blood from willing victims because they believe that it will give them power like a vampire.I did'nt how far the truth of this cult but its for those people who's believe in this.

Blonde Goth from GG

Her name is Jess Tyler and she's only 18 and she's from Australia. One thing that clear she's hates people who's had the wrong impression and judge her before that person had a chance to know her. She's consider herself as nice person with a heart too big for her chest and who cares about the ones she's love more than herself. She told me that she don't tolerate with anyone who's try to break her down. One things that she admitted about herself that she's sometimes speak something before she ever think about it. It's probably a bad attitude of her. She also admitted that she's insecure and lack confidence. She personally think she's the ugliest thing around and she hate her personality. She said that her friendship and trust are hard to gain, but easy to lose. She can easily forget about people who's messed up with her, like her said "I'll cut you from my heart quicker than you can say my name". I did'nt know what she's trying to find in her life bacause she seems like she's bored easily.Hmmm, maybe because she's only 18.

Vrgin Black-Artist of the Month(AUGUST)

Virgin Black
is a band that combines gothic-doom and symphonic metalinfluences. They are from Australia and this band was formed in 1993 in Adelaide. Signed to The End Records (US) and Massacre Records(EU), the band has released 4 albums and 1 EP. One of the band's achievement are receiving praise from such magazines as Metal Hammer and The Village Voice.

As time passed by, they having changed their line-up several times. Virgin Black currently consists of the founding members and main songwriters Samantha Escarbe (guitar) and Rowan London (keyboard, vocals), with Grayh (bass) and Luke Faz (drums) joining in 2007. The group explains the meaning of its name as "the juxtaposition of purity and humanity's darkness".

Virgin Black combines elements of doom metal and classical music, and in its image, the band uses gothic aesthetics, which led a critic to describe their style as having influences of dark wave with gothic atmosphere"and "symphonic gothic-doom".Rooted in Death/Doom, Virgin Black states their influences the British group My Dying Bride, the American gothic metal band Savior Machine and 19th century classical music. Sombre Romantic features operatic elements combined with some doom and black metal influences, representing shrieking vocals, death growls and melodramatic tenor and baritone singing as well as choirs. Their sound is typically sorrowful representing mostly down-tempo arrangements. Occasionally the lead guitarist Samantha Escarbe plays a faster tremolo riffs typical for extreme metal, such as on "Drink the Midnight Hymn" from the debut album. Sometimes there are longer, mellow and emotional guitar solos such as on "Weep for Me". Certain songs such as "Walk without Limbs", combines ominous cello with programmed drums typical form Dark Wavemusic.

Virgin Black's lyrics are typically introspective, melodramatic and poetic, featuring gothic horror take on usually faith-based subjects. While members of Virgin Black have Christian beliefs, the band has often sought to explain that its music is an exploration of spirituality and attempts to highlight the difference between the Church and the spiritual aspects of Christianity. In response to a question on the "rel

igious atmosphere" in their music, Rowan London responded: "We write our music and lyrics from a personal perspective, hence they do have a particular moral and meaning but we also encourage people to shape it to fit their specific situation. "Museum Of Iscariot" for example was written from a spiritual view point and is describing the struggle to step beyond the limitations that we all seem to put on ourselves. However, even though its written within a spiritual context it can also be applied to many different aspects of life. Its important to understand that we're not trying to act as if we know everything about life, it would just be great to see more people considering things other than purely the material world.
